1. For small cuts and wounds :
– A tbsp of turmeric
– A few drops of coconut oil

Turmeric rich in medicinal properties

Make a paste of the turmeric and coconut oil and apply it on the wound or cut. The turmeric acts as an antiseptic and heals the wound.

2. For minor urinary infections and lower abdomen pain :
– A glass of water
– 2 tbsps of cumin seeds

Add the cumin seeds to the water and bring it to a boil, until the water becomes dark brown in colour. *Strain the water and allow it to cool. Drink the full glass of water immediately. You may repeat it for 2 to 3 times a day.

* You may even drink the water with the cumin seeds.

3. For throat phlegm/ congestion/ cold :
– 2 to 3 leaves of cuban oregano ( karpooravalli leaves – see picture below )
– A glass of water

Crush the oregano leaves into bits and add it to the water. Bring the water to a good boil until the water reduces to half its quantity. You may do this by simmering the gas flame.

Allow it to cool and drink.

4. For sore throat/ cough :

– 5 to 6 grains of raw rice
– 2 to 3 black pepper corns

Just take the ingredients and keep them in your mouth. Do not bite. Just allow the juice from them to go into your throat.This can be done preferably in the night.

5. For foot and heal pain :
– A bucket/ basin of water
– 1 handful of rock salt/ epsom salt

Take a bucket or basin of hot water. The temperature of the water needs to be a little hot (that amount of heat that your feet can tolerate) Add the salt to it. Immerse your feet (focus on areas of pain)and leave them for atleast 20 mins.

6. For minor ear aches (caused by cold) :
– A small piece of cotton
– A small pinch of asafoetida (Hing/ Perungayam)

Take the cotton and make it like a shallow cup. Add the asafoetida in it. Fold the cotton into a bundle so that the asafoetida does not come out. Plug it in your ears. Do not plug it deep into your ears.

7. For oil burns :
– Cold water
– Salt

When oil splashes and burns your finger, immediately put your hand under cold running water. The colder the water, the better. You may also apply salt to the burn.Though it aggravates the pain, it heals it.

8. For constipation :
– 5 to 6 raisins
– Half glass of water

Soak the raisins in water overnight and drink the water along with the raisins everyday to clear any constipation problems.

9. For a good night’s sleep :
– A glass of water
– 2 small cinnamon sticks

Soak the cinnamon in water overnight and drink the water in the morning everyday.

10. For good health :
– Water
– 2 to 3 sticks of *Pathimugam (see picture below)

While boiling water add the pathimugam to it. The water will turn pink in colour. Strain the water and drink this water everyday.

*Pathimugam is widely used since ancient days and is an excellent herbal medicine.  Kerala is one state in India which is popular for the use of ayurvedic medicines. It is also known as “Sappan Wood”.If “Pathimugam” is boiled in water, the water gets purified and thereby drinking this water can prevent epidemic diseases spreading through water. This material is used as an ingredient in almost all Ayurvedic medicines and because of its nature it can be used by itself as a medicine.This herbal drinking water has the ability to cure anti-thirst, used as blood purifier, anti- diabetic, improvement of complexion and several other properties.

11. For dengue fever :
– 1 Papaya leaf

Crush the juice out of the papaya leaf and drink it to cure dengue fever.

12. For longstanding inflammation after chikungunya :
– 1 unit of ginger
– 4 units of garlic
– 1 pinch of pepper powder

Grind the ingredients without adding water. Take half tea spoon for 10 days to amazingly relieve the entrapped inflammation in joints….. Prof Dr Augustine Kunnattedam, Department of Biochemistry, Kerala University.

13. For joint pain and other other general pain :
– 1 cup of sesame seed oil (Nallennai)
– 2 to 3 cloves of crushed garlic, along with the peels (skin)
– A small piece of camphor

Heat the oil along with the garlic and camphor. Once the oil is heated well and you get a good aroma of the garlic and camphor, switch off the stove and allow the oil to cool down. Store the contents in a bottle. Whenever you want to use it, take the required amount and slightly warm it (heat it up to your tolerance level on your skin). Rub the oil on the affected joints and massage the area thoroughly. Let it soak for as many hours as possible. (The longer the better). Have a good hot water bath.

14. For diabetes and insulin problems :
– 2 lady’s finger/ okra
– a glass of water

Chop the head and tail of the okra and make a slit in the middle. Soak them in a glass of water overnight. Remove the okra and drink the water in the morning as soon as you wake up. Drink this water everyday for good results.

15. For clean white teeth :

– a few drops of lemon juice
– 1 tsp of salt

Add a few drops of lemon juice to the salt and brush daily for sparkling white teeth.

16. For general stomach pain and pain around your navel or belly button :

– 1 tbsp of fenugreek seeds
– 1 glass of thin buttermilk with salt

Add the fenugreek seeds to the buttermilk and drink it to relieve the pain. If needed immediately and if you have no time to make the buttermilk, you can take the fenugreek seeds with water.

17. For pain around your navel caused due to heat  (sootu vali) : 

– 1 tbsp of sesame seed oil


– naamakatti (see picture below)

Make the palm of your hand like a cup. Take sesame seed oil in that and apply it on your abdomen concentrating the belly button in a gentle tapping motion and then in circular motion around the belly button. This will relieve you of soot bali or heat.


Take some naamakatti and make a paste out of it in the palm of your hand with a few drops of water and apply it in the same manner as you do with the sesame seed oil.
